Outdoor advertising in Lucknow: formats, permissions and planning

Outdoor advertising in Lucknow ranges from hoardings, unipoles and gantries on main roads to metro media, LED screens, airport media and LED vans. In Lucknow, no hoarding or sign may go up without prior written permission from the municipal corporation, so book approved sites. Plan around where your audience travels, keep the creative to a few words, make sure the site is lit, and ask for dated photographs as proof.

Who gives permission

In Lucknow, permission comes from Lucknow Municipal Corporation (Nagar Nigam). On 2 February 2026 the state notified the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation (Regulation of Sky Signs and Advertisements) Rules, 2026, which apply in all of the state's municipal corporations: no advertisement, hoarding or sky sign may be displayed without prior written permission from the Municipal Commissioner or an authorised officer, and existing approved contracts stay valid until they expire. Sites are usually allotted to media owners for set periods.

Uttar Pradesh has 17 municipal corporations. In smaller towns, permission comes from the nagar palika parishad or the nagar panchayat. Sites on land controlled by other bodies, such as railways, airports or national highways, follow those bodies' rules.

Planning a campaign

  • Start with the routes. Office commutes, school runs, shopping streets, hospital areas, highways into the city and the airport.
  • Judge every site. How far away it can be read, the angle to traffic, what blocks it, how long people see it (traffic signals help), lighting, clutter and neighbouring ads.
  • Choose formats by job. Unipoles for reach on fast roads, gantries for head-on views, metro and malls for city audiences, LED screens for video and time-of-day creative.
  • Run long enough. People need to pass a site more than once for it to register.
  • Write for the road. A few words, one image, a large brand, strong contrast and a phone number or QR code. Hindi or bilingual copy reads more easily for most audiences in Uttar Pradesh. Leave out fine print.
  • Keep it looked after. Lighting checks, torn flex replaced and cleaning after storms.
  • Ask for proof. Dated photographs of each site; for lit sites, a photograph after dark helps.

Common mistakes

  • Many weak sites instead of fewer good ones
  • Sites that are dark at night
  • Creative with too many words to read at a distance
  • Unapproved sites that are taken down mid-campaign
  • No proof that the creative went up, or stayed up

Questions

Who gives permission for hoardings in Lucknow?

Lucknow Municipal Corporation (Nagar Nigam). Under the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation (Regulation of Sky Signs and Advertisements) Rules, 2026, no hoarding or sign may be displayed without prior written permission from the Municipal Commissioner or an authorised officer. Land held by railways, airports or highways follows those bodies’ rules.

How many words should a hoarding have?

As few as possible: a short line, one image, the brand and one way to respond, such as a phone number or QR code. People read a hoarding in a few seconds from a moving vehicle.

What is a unipole?

A unipole is a hoarding mounted on a single tall pole, so it can be seen from far away on highways and wide roads.
