BTL marketing in Uttar Pradesh: a practical guide
BTL (below-the-line) marketing reaches people in person, where they already are: markets, malls, colonies, campuses and shops. In Uttar Pradesh it works best when it is planned town by town, timed to festivals, harvests, weddings and admissions, run by trained local teams, and proven with dated photographs and daily reports.

What BTL means
Advertising is often split into three kinds:
- ATL (above the line): mass media such as television, radio and newspapers, reaching many people at once.
- BTL (below the line): direct, in-person contact, such as activations, sampling, roadshows, in-store branding and events.
- TTL (through the line): a campaign that uses both and links them, for example a newspaper ad that sends people to an activation.
The line is blurry in practice. What matters is whether each part of a campaign reaches the right people and gives them a reason to act.
Why BTL matters in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state. The 2011 Census counted about 19.98 crore people there, about 78 per cent of them in rural areas, spread across what are now 75 districts. Many buying decisions are made in local markets, with the family and on a shopkeeper's advice, and trust is built face to face. Mass media reaches the state unevenly; on-ground work fills the gaps and lets people try, ask and buy on the spot.
Formats that work
| Format | Where | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Market activation (canopy or kiosk) | Weekly markets, high streets | Launches, trials, enquiries |
| Mall activation | City malls | Urban audiences, premium products |
| Roadshow with an LED van | Town to town on a planned route | Launches and awareness over wide areas |
| Sampling and demonstrations | Markets, shops, colonies | Products people need to try |
| In-store branding | Dealers and shops | The moment of purchase |
| Society and campus activations | Residential societies, colleges, offices | Real estate, education, finance, durables |
| Haats and melas | Weekly rural markets and fairs | Rural reach |
Planning a BTL campaign, step by step
- Set one goal and how you will count it: trials, leads, registrations, footfall or sales.
- Choose towns and exact locations from sales data, dealer networks and where your buyers gather.
- Fit the calendar: market days, festivals, harvests, exams and the weather.
- Design the experience: what people see, do and take away.
- Arrange permissions with the local authorities, mall managements, society committees or campus administrations, as each location needs.
- Hire and train promoters: product knowledge, a short script, the local language and good conduct.
- Produce the material: canopies, standees, leaflets, samples and uniforms.
- Run with daily reports: counts, leads, problems and photographs, every day.
- Review and shift: move teams to the towns and locations that work.
Timing
Spending in Uttar Pradesh follows a yearly rhythm: the festive season from Navratri to Diwali and Chhath in October and November, the wedding seasons, rural income after the rabi harvest in March and April and the kharif harvest in October and November, and results and admissions from April to July. The monsoon, from late June to early October, makes outdoor activations harder. Our Uttar Pradesh marketing calendar goes month by month.
Measuring BTL
- Did it happen? Dated photographs of every location and day, with team attendance.
- Who took part? People spoken to, samples given, demonstrations done.
- Who responded? Leads, registrations, QR code scans, calls and WhatsApp messages.
- Did it sell? Footfall at dealers and sales in activated areas compared with others, where you can track them.
Common mistakes
- Spreading a budget thinly over too many towns
- Skipping permissions, then losing days to stoppages
- Promoters who do not know the product
- No way to count response
- No proof, or proof only at the end
How we can help
MM Advertising plans and runs BTL activations across Uttar Pradesh from Lucknow, with its own LED van fleet and branding workshop, and proves every day with dated photographs. See BTL activations.
Questions
What are examples of BTL activities?
Market and mall activations, roadshows with LED vans, product sampling and demonstrations, in-store branding, society and campus activations, and events at haats and melas.
Is BTL better than ATL?
Neither is better on its own. ATL builds wide awareness quickly; BTL turns it into trials, enquiries and sales on the ground. Campaigns in Uttar Pradesh usually need both.
How do you measure a BTL campaign?
Count what happened (dated photographs of every location and day), who took part, who responded (leads, scans, calls) and, where you can track it, sales in activated areas.
